2026 Amazon FBA Seller Fee Guide
Updated for 2026 Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) Fee SchedulesNet Amazon Margin = Gross Sale - Referral Fee (avg 15%) - FBA Fulfillment Fee - Inbound Placement Fee - Storage Reserve - Sunk COGS - Tax Buffer.
1. Amazon Referral Fees: The Baseline Toll
Every product sold on Amazon incurs a Category Referral Fee, which is a percentage of total sales price with a standard minimum fee of $0.30 per item:
- Standard 15% Categories: Home & Kitchen, Beauty, Sports, Toys, Tools, Books, and Electronics Accessories.
- Apparel & Accessories: 5% for items priced under $15.00; 10% for items between $15.00 and $20.00; 15% for items over $20.00.
- Consumer Electronics: 8% flat on major devices (consoles, laptops, cameras).
- Grocery & Gourmet Food: 8% for items under $15.00; 15% for items $15.00 and above.
2. Inbound Placement Service Fees (2024-2026 System)
Amazon charges an Inbound Placement Service Fee to distribute inventory across regional fulfillment centers. Sellers can select between inbound shipment options during workflow creation:
Amazon-Optimized Splits (No Fee)
You send your shipment split into 4 or 5 separate destinations across the US. Zero placement fee, but higher per-box carrier inbound freight costs.
Partial Placement Split
You send to 2-3 locations. Amazon charges roughly $0.12 - $0.34 per standard unit to handle internal rebalancing.
Minimal Split (Single Destination)
You ship everything to one fulfillment center. Amazon charges $0.21 - $0.68 per unit depending on size and weight.
3. Low-Inventory-Level Surcharge
To prevent stockouts in localized warehouses, Amazon assesses a Low-Inventory-Level Surcharge on standard-sized products when historical inventory levels are consistently below 28 days of historical supply:
- 0 to 14 Days Historical Supply: Up to $0.89/unit surcharge billed on sold units.
- 14 to 21 Days Historical Supply: Up to $0.63/unit surcharge.
- 21 to 28 Days Historical Supply: Up to $0.32/unit surcharge.
- Exemptions: New professional sellers, products enrolled in FBA New Selection, and items shipped via Amazon AWD (Warehousing & Distribution).
4. Monthly Storage Rates & Aged Inventory Surcharges
Storage fees fluctuate dramatically between standard months and Q4 holiday peaks:
- January - September (Standard): $0.78 per cubic foot for standard-size items ($0.56/cu ft for oversize).
- October - December (Q4 Peak): $2.40 per cubic foot for standard-size items ($1.40/cu ft for oversize) - a 3.08x cost multiplier.
- Aged Inventory Surcharges (Long-Term Storage): Units stored longer than 180 days incur monthly surcharges starting at $0.50/cu ft, scaling up to $7.90/cu ft for units sitting past 365 days.
5. Return Processing Fees
Amazon applies a return processing fee to customer-returned items in high-return rate categories (such as Apparel and Shoes) when return rates exceed the category baseline. This covers operational reverse logistics and grading.
